Institute Releases Guide to SSA Benefits
for
Young People Entering the Workforce

The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) has released a booklet titled Going to Work: A Guide to Social Security Benefits and Employment for Young People with Disabilities. The purpose of the booklet is to provide young people with developmental disabilities -- along with their families and professionals who work with them -- some practical information about work incentives. The booklet includes chapters on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), with information about how the two programs are impacted by earned income, as well as information about the Ticket to Work program, and other guidance for young people managing Social Security benefits. The booklet is available at http://www.communityinclusion.org/article.php?article_id=211.

Jamie Olszewski honored as Staff Person of the Month

Jaime Olszewski, Database Analyst, is an integral part of the Medicaid Department as well as the entire Program. Jaime is a hard-working, conscientious, pleasant, outgoing perfectionist. She takes great pride in developing spreadsheets, computer formulas, forms and tracking systems to assist many departments throughout the Board. Without hesitation, Jaime works with other departments to develop reports that help manage their systems. She is very involved with the waiting lists for both the Medicaid waiver programs and Day programming budgets. One of Jaime’ s projects involved the development of a Day Services cost worksheet that was so well done it is now being used throughout the State by other counties. The Board is pleased to recognize her as the June 2009 Staff Person of the Month.

County Commissioners join the effort to end the R-Word

The Lucas County Commissioners issued a Proclamation supporting the effort to end the use of the "R-word" and replace it with "respect." The nationwide effort, initiated by Special Olympics, urges us to take a stand and educate others of the dehumanizing and harmful effects of the words "retard" or "retarded." Commissioner  Tina Skeldon Wozniak said, "This hurtful word deprives too many people of the dignity and respect they deserve." Accepting the Proclamation from the Commissioners were Special Olympics athletes George Rose and Jonathon Reis. For more information go to r-word.org

Superintendent and advocates unveil petition at Statehouse rally

Superintendent John Trunk unveiled the petition to legislators at the March 5th rally at the Statehouse to kick off MR/DD Awareness Month. The petition, signed at the Call2Action event recently at Lott Industries, urges legislators not to cut any more funding from the state budget for mr/dd services.

Ann Seth receives the Board's annual Spirit Award

Each year, the Board presents its Spirit Award to an individual who has contributed a lifetime of service in support of individuals with developmental disabilities. This year, the award was presented to Ann Seth. At parent and advocate meetings there is no more familiar face than that of Ann Seth. And no one can claim a better record of volunteerism. Most important, though,  has been Ann's activism at so many public forums and hearings -- helping define the major issues and keeping the communication process with families open and always ongoing.  (Pictured is Mrs. Seth receiving the award from Board Secretary Mary Lou Wilhelm.)

Five year accreditation indicates Lucas County exceeds standards

After an extensive review of programs, services, procedures and policies, the Lucas County Board of MR/DD has maintained its accreditation from the State of Ohio. “Our five year accreditation affirms that we not only met the standards, but exceed them,” said Superintendent John Trunk. “This accreditation, as well as our recent accreditation from the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, demonstrates to our community that services for individuals with developmental disabilities are being delivered in a quality manner and tax dollars are being spent prudently,” he said.

“We are very pleased with our accreditations and pledge to continue providing services in a top quality manner. “This accomplishment would not have been possible without the effort of every single staff member,” said Mr. Trunk. “This was a real team effort.” Mr. Trunk said surveyors were impressed with all aspects of Board services and particularly with the Board’s efforts to utilize feedback from persons served and their families in the decision-making process.
