Need to Know

Car Seat Safety: Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death. In 2001, 1,579 children ages 14 and under died in motor vehicle crashes, and in 2002 an estimated 227,000 were injured. Even if you’re a careful driver, you can’t control other drivers’ behavior or eliminate the possibility of a crash. You can, though, greatly reduce the risk that your children will be seriously injured or killed by properly restraining them in car seats.

Here are some tips on how to determine if your child is in the correct car seat.

  1. Children should be in a rear-facing car seat until they are 1 year of age and weigh 20 pounds. If your child has outgrown their infant seat but doesn’t meet the above requirements you can purchase a convertible car seat that can be positioned both rear-facing and forward-facing when appropriate.

  2. Children weighing 20-40 pounds should be using a car seat in the forward-facing position with an internal harness system.

  3. Children weighing 40-80 pounds should use a booster seat that will allow them to use the car’s lap and shoulder belt. There are two types of booster seats; high-back booster that comes up behind the child’s head and should be used if the seat does not have a head rest that comes up behind the child’s ears and a back-less booster seat that can be used if there is a head rest available.

To determine if your child is able to ride without a car seat here are some guidelines to follow.

  1. Your child should be able to sit all the way back against the vehicle seat back, with his/her knees bent comfortably over the edge of the seat cushion.

  2. The lap belt should be snug and flat against the upper thighs.

  3. The shoulder belt should be snug and flat against the chest and collarbone.

Remember never allow your child to put a shoulder belt under his/her arm or behind their back. This could cause serious injury and is an indication that they may still need to be in a booster seat. To have your car seat checked, at no cost, contact the Greater Toledo Safe Kids Coalition at 419-291-5993 or go online at www.safekids.org for more information on car seat safety.
